The transmission is vital to your vehicle driving properly, and if you start to see signs of problems in it, it’s best to have them fixed earlier rather than later. (Since nearly all new vehicles have automatic transmissions, we’re leaving manual transmissions for another time since their issues are different.) One sure sign your transmission has a problem is when you notice it’s not changing gears like it used to. Or perhaps you observe when it does change gears, they slip when you are driving. Gear change problems could be as simple as something wrong with your transmission fluid, but it could be more serious, so get this one checked out soon. Another trouble sign is when you feel your transmission shaking and vibrating as you’re accelerating, decelerating or trying to maintain a constant speed. Hearing odd noises when you are standing still and in neutral is another warning that something’s wrong, It's always a good idea to look around on the garage floor, or wherever you park your vehicle, to see if there is anything leaking. Transmission fluid leaks are an important sign of trouble and should be followed up quickly. The fluid is usually clear or pinkish red, and it smells sweet. Call us soon if you see it under your vehicle. Your nose can also be helpful in sensing when your transmission might need attention. Transmission fluid can burn when it overheats, and if you smell a burning smell, let your service advisor know as soon as you can. Other odors that could alert you to transmission problems are burning plastic or rubber from wires. The earlier we can catch a transmission problem, the better. When they’re covering your windshield, they can temporarily obscure your view of the road, leaving you driving blind. And when you can’t see the road clearly ahead of you, it can be really scary. That’s one of the reasons it’s important to maintain your windshield cleaning system, which includes your wipers, blades and washers. They’re three vital components that work together to ensure you’re clearly seeing what’s going on with the road and drivers around you. Your wipers are doing the physical work on the surface of your windshield’s glass. The rubber or silicone is what touches the surface of the glass, and after time and exposure to the elements, wiper blades can get brittle, lose their flexibility, rip and tear to the point where they simply can’t clear the glass. What holds the wiper blades close to the glass is important, too. Conventional blades use a metal frame which holds flexible rubber inserts. Just the inserts can be changed which keeps replacement costs down. Another type that’s gaining more popularity is called a beam blade. It doesn’t have a frame but instead has a stiff beam and blade combination. Beam blades can conform more snugly to the curved glass used in many recent vehicle designs. Plus they have a sweeping shape which harnesses the pressure of the air that passes over them to apply more pressure during wiping, especially effective at highway speeds. High-tech rubber wiper blades, what …?! Seriously, they are pretty cool. If you crossed the conventional frame blade with a beam blade, you’d have the hybrid wiper. It’s constructed like a traditional wiper with a plastic frame that takes advantage of the aerodynamic shape of a beam blade. Equally important to your windshield is the washer system since wiper blades simply don’t work on dry glass. The washers use a pump to shoot fluid on your glass to remove debris, dust and other contaminants. All these systems need to always be at the ready since we never know what elements we’ll encounter on the road. Regular inspections and maintenance of your wipers and washers can ensure you’ll be able to see far down the road ahead of you for clearer vision and safer traveling. (Brake Caliper Replacement)Posted November 16, 2025 1:16 AMKeeping your vehicle's brakes in top shape is one of the most important things you can do for your safety and those on the road with you. Most drivers know a little about brake pads and rotors but maybe not so much about another brake component called the calipers. Disc brakes work by a mechanical system that presses your brake pads against discs called rotors (you can usually see these discs through your wheels). The friction stops your vehicle smoothly when everything is working the way it should. The calipers use the hydraulic pressure of the brake fluid to apply the stopping power. After they've been on your vehicle for a while, the calipers can get stuck or wear out. If calipers on one side of the vehicle work correctly and not on the other, you might feel a pull in one direction. You might feel the same kind of pull if the caliper is stuck and is applying constant pressure. You might hear scraping or squealing coming from a stuck caliper and you might smell burning on that side. The friction from a caliper that's always applying pressure may cause that wheel to heat up, so after you've pulled your vehicle off the road safely, the wheel with the stuck caliper will might feel hotter than the others Because there are many different components to the brakes, it's best to leave the diagnosis and repair to a trained technician. They will run each wheel through a series of tests and inspections that can pinpoint the problem. Sometimes it involves more components than just the caliper that may need changing at the same time. The best way to make sure your brakes will perform well is to is to have our service center perform regular inspections and follow the vehicle manufacturer's recommended service. That way your brakes will be ready, willing and able when you call on them to put a stop to things. Kingwood Service Center Lean Times (Shocks and Springs)Posted November 9, 2025 1:15 AMYou may have noticed your vehicle going through lean times. By that, we mean it's literally leaning to one side. When you notice that, you should get it checked out at your service facility soon because you could have a serious problem. Many things can cause a vehicle to lean. You may have problems with your struts, shocks or springs. They all work in tandem to make your ride more comfortable. The struts bear the weight of the vehicle's body, the shock absorbers employ a piston that keeps your tires in contact with the road and controls movement of the vehicle's body. Springs also absorb impacts from uneven road surfaces. If these components get stuck, either too high or too low, they cause your vehicle to lean. That's because that side of the vehicle isn't at the height it is designed to be. A technician will determine where the problem is. Outside elements such as moisture plus hard knocks to these components can weaken them, eventually resulting in a failure. The metal can get so fatigued that it breaks. Often when one side of a vehicle is too high or too low, your service advisor will advise you to have the other side done as well. That's because if only one side has new parts installed, it won't be level with the side that has old parts. There are a couple of other reasons vehicles can lean. One is that the suspension can be bent or the chassis twisted, again due to wear and tear by driving on rough roads, over badly maintained railroad tracks or in deep potholes. Another reason your vehicle may lean is that the tires and/or wheels aren't all the same size. Or one side might have drastically over or underinflated tires. This can be a dangerous condition since the imbalance can affect steering and handling. Considering what drivers put suspension parts, tires and wheels through, it's not surprising that they can be punished so much that they don't hold up like we want them to. A level-headed driver will make sure to be driving a level vehicle by making sure these components are maintained in good condition. Kingwood Service Center Knowledge is Power (Battery Testing)Posted November 2, 2025 1:18 AMIt’s likely happened to you once or twice. You head to your vehicle, open the door, turn the key and… lo and behold, your battery is dead. Now you’re stranded, may have to get a jump or a tow, and you’ll definitely be late for wherever you were headed. While your vehicle may sometimes give you warning signs, other times it doesn’t. As many as one out of every four vehicles will have to have its battery replaced in the next 12 months. If you don’t want to be surprised the next time your battery fails, consider having it tested. There are different types of battery testing. One measures voltage. Another checks for something called conductance. By sending a certain type of electric current into the battery, it can measure how healthy your vehicle’s battery is. There’s also a load test. It checks how your battery is working while drawing power from it. Newer test equipment found in professional service facilities can check for a number of different conditions using different methods. Most vehicle batteries last around five years. It all depends on how you drive and in what conditions. Extreme heat and cold will take their toll on a battery and shorten its life. Stop-and-go city driving will also place batteries under more stress than smooth, continuous driving. So, what are some signs that your battery is starting to show its age? Well, the battery or alternator light may illuminate after you’ve started the vehicle or come on while you are driving. If you’ve left lights or some equipment on and drained the battery, that can be very hard on it. Because the battery is one of your vehicle’s most important components, it’s a good idea to have us check it regularly. In addition to examining the battery itself, a technician will also inspect the terminals and cables for corrosion, damage, fraying wires and loose connections.
